llms.txt for an online store: what it is for, a template to copy
llms.txt is a small text file at the root of a site that introduces it to language models. For an online store, it is where you state plainly what you sell, how you deliver and how a product can be returned.
Where it comes from
The format was proposed in 2024 by Jeremy Howard, on llmstxt.org. It is Markdown: a title, a one-line summary, then sections of annotated links.
No assistant commits to reading it: it is a convention, like robots.txt in its early days. It costs one file, and it gives an agent what it is looking for without crawling ten pages.
What we found
Our agent looks for /llms.txt in every test; it counts for 2 points out of 100 in the method. Of the 60 stores where this was measured, 36 publish one.
Shopify publishes one by default, introducing the store and its UCP checkout protocol to agents. Check that it says what you want.
What it should contain for a store
- The store name and one sentence on what it sells.
- The main categories, with a link each.
- Delivery: times, countries, costs or free-shipping threshold.
- Returns: period and conditions, with a link to the page.
- Ordering: payment methods, guest checkout or not.
- Customer service contact.

Where to publish it
At /llms.txt on your domain, as plain UTF-8 text. On PrestaShop or WooCommerce, put the file at the site root. Then check with our free tool that it is read, along with the other files agents look at: robots.txt, sitemap, UCP profile.
Check in a minute what an agent reads from your site, llms.txt included. Check my site
